Vera: The Agentic Startup Generalist
A year of working with agentic startups became a living system that gates autonomy and quality, while still contributing to the commons.
The Agentic Startup Generalist is public and MIT. We call her Vera.
Vera embraces the semi-autonomous venture era: a system with both quality gates and autonomy gates, so she works as a high-powered cyborg collaborator instead of a slop or chaos machine. We built her with real users over a year, in live ventures, and she is running ours now. As we deploy her into more of them, the Alembic funnels the general insights back into the commons.
We spent a year working with and interviewing agentic startups. The people at the bleeding edge are all home-rolling solutions heavily catered to their domains and their brains, because nothing off the shelf gives them a running start. Most of them are also stuck in single-player silos: everyone is moving fast, but their systems can’t talk to each other and nobody is quite sure what is going on. Reliable multiplayer AI is the engine that seeds innovation at the speed of play, without sacrificing accountability or visibility.
Vera cleans up the mess. She natively supports:
- Comparing meeting transcriptions against active tasks and GitHub issues/PRs, to keep warm context on top
- Running concurrent PMF experiments with real intelligence pipelines
- Network enrichment and client pipelines
- A universal translator that remembers each person’s domain, skills, technical depth, and communication style, so cross-functional teammates see eye to eye
- Organizing and maintaining task systems and repo hygiene
- Generating cron jobs so subtasks roll up into larger organizational goals

Vera is the generalist operator that runs our own ventures and those of NimbleCo clients, the consultancy we run for teams building on Swarm Map. One lifecycle — FRAME → GATHER → ASSESS → RECOMMEND → HANDOFF — over every unit of work, from a two-hour research question to a six-week PMF experiment. RECOMMEND is the phase where the agent assembles the evidence and then stops, because the call is a human’s. She targets hermes-agent-mt and installs through Swarm Map’s registry, so anyone already running a fleet can pull her in from the dashboard. That install path is why the release gate matters.
She was built out of live ventures, out of working files that were never meant to leave. So the extraction came with a sanitization gate: a manually dispatched audit that runs on the release candidate before any tag exists, because a registry that pins by tag name makes publishing a tag an act of distribution.
That is the wager underneath the whole thing. Ventures can still protect their moat in an era when IP is nearly meaningless in the face of LLM reversing, while contributing to a commons that feeds back into their own benefit. True competition and ease of entrance, without giving up your edge. The rising tide lifts everyone.
